Michelle Obama hosting Minnesota screenwriter, film at White House

Brooklyn Park screenwriter Michael Starrbury is in Washington, D.C., Wednesday for a special event being hosted by first lady Michelle Obama at the White House.

Variety says Obama is hosting a screening of the drama "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete," which was written by Starrbury.

The film follows two inner city boys (Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon) who are left to fend for themselves in Brooklyn, New York, after their mothers are taken away by authorities.

Variety says the screening will be attended by college and youth organizations, high school teachers, counselors and college students. Starrbury will also be in attendance.

"When I heard that 'Mister & Pete' would be screening at the White House and I was invited to attend, the first thing I thought was, 'There goes my goal of going my entire adult life without wearing a suit,'" Starrbury told the Star Tribune.

According to IndieWire, the White House said the screening of the "Mister & Pete" will be followed by "a group discussion about the challenges and best practices regarding education access in underserved communities."

Starrbury, who was nominated for a prestigious Humanitas Prize for "Mister & Pete" in July, earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Screenplay for the film in November.

The film, which stars Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks and Anthony Mackie, made its debut at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
