After numerous nominations, first-time Minneapolis actor Barkhad Abdi actually gets to take a trophy home.

Abdi won Best Supporting Actor at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards for his role as the menacing Somali pirate leader Muse in "Captain Phillips," Variety reports.

The BAFTA trophy marked the first major awards season win for Abdi, who is also up for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role. Abdi was also nominated for the "Captain Phillips" role for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Critics Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globes – but lost each time to "Dallas Buyers Club" star Jared Leto.

WCCO says Abdi thanked co-star Tom Hanks at Sunday's BAFTA ceremony before getting a bit more personal.

“Last but not least I want to thank the other pirates in the film,” Abdi said. “My friends, and the people that we came from nothing and we got this. Thank you.”

Abdi and three fellow Somali immigrants from Minneapolis played the pirate crew in the high-seas thriller, based on the real-life hijacking 2009 of Captain Richard Phillips’ freighter, the US-flagged MV Maersk Alabama.

Hanks was at the ceremony and celebrated Abdi's win a tweet and WhoSay photo that said, "He IS the captain now!" – a take off of Abdi's line from the film, "I'm the captain now."

Abdi also thanked his hometown on Twitter.

In an analysis of which BAFTA winners have a shot at repeating their wins at the Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter's awards prognosticator Scott Feinberg says Abdi doesn't pose "much of a threat" to frontrunner Leto despite the BAFTA win.

Feinberg pointed out that neither Leto or his "Dallas Buyers Club" co-star Matthew McConaughey were nominated for BAFTAs because the film wasn't heavily screened for voters, which effectively cleared the way for Abdi to seize the trophy.

That also worked in favor of "12 Years a Slave" star Chiwetel Ejiofor, Feinberg says. Ejiofor won for Best Actor, and the historical drama – co-produced by Minnesota native Bill Pohlad – took Best Picture at the BAFTAs.
