Minnesota comes in at No. 1 on most miserable winters list

We can't argue with this ranking. At least not today.

Minnesota is No. 1 on a list of states ranked by how miserable their winters are.

The list was compiled by Thrillist and released this week. To come up with the rankings, the publication considered weather patterns, average temperatures, how effectively snow is cleared off the roads, and success of winter-season sports teams.

Minnesota is said to be the most miserable, followed by Michigan at No. 2, Alaska in third, with North Dakota and Maine rounding out the top five.

In the entry for Minnesota, Thrillist pokes a little fun at our Nordic heritage and our Minnesota nice qualities, but says it thinks it's all an act.

"We think beneath that eternal Nordic happiness is some inner pain, trapped below the surface like a Grain Belt dropped into an ice fishing hole, a cauldron of hot anger ready to spill out like a cut-open Jucy Lucy," Thrillist says.

Why? Because of our below-zero temperatures, heavy snowfalls and our lack of championship sports teams, with Thrillist adding: "All of your good high school hockey players end up starring for NHL teams in other cities. Ice fishing can’t be that cool, really."

Thrillist goes on to say that it's OK for us to show a little displeasure with what we have to deal with in the winter.

And this week, with temperatures struggling to get above zero and wind chills approaching dangerous levels, we may take them up on the chance to be un-Minnesotan for once.
