We already knew Minnesota can be a pretty good place to live, and now a new U.S. News and World Report ranking is supporting that.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes came in at No. 3 on U.S. News' Best States ranking, which the publication calls the "first comprehensive view" of how states are doing when it comes to helping the people who live there.

Here's a look at the top five states, and how they ranked in the major categories:

U.S. News says this ranking isn't just about bragging rights, though. It's about informing people and policymakers about what needs improvement across the country. The publication also notes its Best States ranking comes at a time when there's a lot of focus on shifting power from the federal to the state level.

“This ranking affirms what we already know: We live in one of the very best states in the country,” Gov. Mark Dayton said in a statement Tuesday. “But we still have more work to do to ensure that Minnesota is a state that works for everyone. I urge the Legislature to join me in making the investments necessary to ensure that our state remains a national leader in education, health care, modern infrastructure, and other essential elements of economic opportunity for all our citizens.”

U.S. News developed on online portal with all the information it gathered for the rankings – it includes more than 10,000 charts, plus news, analysis and daily reporting for each state.
