Last November, Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar made history when she was elected as the first Somali-American legislator.

This week, she's on the cover of Time magazine.

Omar is one of 46 women featured in a Time special project called, “Firsts: Women who are Changing the World."

The series highlights inspirational women of all backgrounds who "broke the glass ceiling." Omar is named alongside female trailblazers like Hillary Rodham Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Madeleine Albright, and Barbara Walters.

And she will appear on one of 12 different covers of the magazine, which hits stands on Friday. There's also a companion book available for preorder.

"Our goal with Firsts is for every woman and girl to find someone whose presence in the highest reaches of success says to her that it is safe to climb, come on up, the view is spectacular," Time says.

In a Facebook post Thursday, Omar said she was "honored" to be part of the project.

The Legislator

In her Time essay, Omar shares her story of fleeing her homeland of Somalia during the civil war.

Her family spent four years in a refugee camp before coming to America to start a new life. But when they arrived, Omar found that America was different than what she had imagined.

She says in the piece:

"When you’re growing up in an environment where your faith and your race are not topics of conversation, it’s really hard to come to an environment where all of that means something. Being black in the U.S. means something. There’s a history. Being an immigrant, a refugee, Muslim – all of those things represent an otherness that is not typical or easily confined into the social fabric of this country."

She also talks about overcoming the negativity associated with her gender, looks, and background to win the 2016 election.

You can check out the entire profile and accompanying video here, and see the full list of women here.

Omar serves Minnesota House District 60B – her legislative area includes parts of the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood, southeast Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota.

She was on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah earlier this year.
