Minnesota 'Mummy' maker Stephen Sommers wraps up deal for latest film

St. Cloud-raised filmmaker Stephen Sommers has secured a distribution deal for a film he shot two years ago, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

According to the trade publication, Image Entertainment has picked up U.S. rights to "Odd Thomas," a big-screen adaptation of the Dean R. Koontz book.

The film, which stars "Star Trek" Chekov actor Anton Yelchin, has reportedly been mired in investor setbacks and lawsuits over the past couple of years.

Yelchin stars in the title role as a short order cook who can commune with the dead. Addison Timlin (the upcoming Minnesota-made "Best Man Down," formerly titled "Lumpy") and Willem Dafoe co-star.

Sommers wrote the screenplay.

“Director Stephen Sommers’s spectacular style and extraordinary vision translates so well to the big screen for this material,” said Image executive Bill Bromiley in a statement carried by Deadline Hollywood. “We are proud to distribute the film and introduce the magical world of Odd Thomas to a wider audience.”

The $30 million film is the first in a series of seven "Odd Thomas" books. The first six books have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and the seventh book is still on the way.

"Odd Thomas" will be released sometime in the first quarter of 2014.

A graduate of St. John's University in Collegeville, Sommers, 51, has written and directed such blockbuster films as "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," "Van Helsing" and "G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA."
