Minnesota native snares Captain Hook role in new 'Pan'

Roseau native Garrett Hedlund is apparently on the hook for one of the starring roles in an upcoming re-imagining of the classic tale of Peter Pan.

Deadline reports the Roseau-born actor has been offered the role of Captain Hook in "Pan," which will be directed by Joe Wright ("Atonement").

Hugh Jackman signed on to the film Friday to play the main villain, Blackbeard, Variety says. An open casting call is planned to find a 10- to 12-year-old actor needed to play Peter Pan.

According to Variety, "Pan" will take place during World War II and follows an orphan named Peter, who finds himself in Neverland after being kidnapped by Pirates.

In a new twist on the classic story, Captain Hook is Peter's friend, Variety says, and Blackbeard is the boy's nemesis.

The movie, which will be released by Warner Bros., is pegged for a July 17, 2015, release.

According to the Internet Movie Database, Hedlund lived in Roseau until ninth grade, when he moved with his family to Scottsdale, Arizona.

Hedlund's film credits include "Troy" opposite Brad Pitt and "Tron: Legacy," where he starred as Sam Flynn – the grown son of Jeff Bridges' character, Kevin Flynn. Hedlund also starred in the 2004 film version of “Friday Night Lights.”

Most recently, Hedlund starred in a supporting role in Joel and Ethan Coen's folk music tale "Inside Llewyn Davis."

Last year, Hedlund reportedly turned down the role of Christian Grey in the big-screen adaptation of the provocative international best-seller "50 Shades of Grey."

Hedlund will next star in the Coen brothers-scripted, true-life drama "Unbroken," which will be directed by Angelina Jolie.
