Starting Sunday evening, law enforcement officers from around the state will stand for 24 hours straight to honor the 278 Minnesota officers who've died on duty over the years.

It's for Law Enforcement Memorial Day, which is on Monday. It's a day to pay tribute to those who either died or were injured in the line of duty.

The state Law Enforcement Memorial Association explains that honor guards from the association will take their places at the memorial in St. Paul at 7 p.m. Sunday. The officers will take turns standing in 30-minute shifts. This will go on until Monday evening.

Then at 7:25 p.m. Monday, the public is invited to join for a candlelight vigil. There will be tributes to the officers who most recently died, including Aitkin County Deputy Steven Sandberg who died Oct. 2015.

Gov. Mark Dayton has also ordered flags to be flown at half-staff on Monday.

According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, about 143 officers in the U.S. were killed in the line of duty last year.
