Need a last-minute Halloween costume? Don't pick one of these

If you want to stand out, avoid the 5 most popular Halloween costumes of 2017.

For some Halloween lovers, figuring out the perfect costume each year can actually be kind of stressful.

While it's fun to be creative and DIY costumes are often the most memorable, when it's down to the last minute, you just have to pick something and call it a day.

But if you want to stand out and not be "twinsies" with someone else, avoid the looks on this list – they're the most searched for Halloween costumes of 2017, according to Google Trends.

1. Wonder Woman

The majority of the popular Halloween costumes this year are linked to movies, so it's no surprise that one of 2017's major blockbusters spawned the most searched for costume.

Everyone and their mom loved Wonder Woman – so much thatsearches for red corsets went up 115 percent this year, according to Buzzfeed. You'll definitely look like a badass, but probably won't be the only Diana Prince at the party.

2. Harley Quinn

This one screams "I'm recycling last year's most popular costume and hope no one notices."

3. Clowns

Clown costumes are pretty much timeless, but with the return of IT and shows like American Horror Story, they're arguably scarier than ever – so scary that real clowns claim their reputations and livelihoods have been hurt.

Add to that the creepy clown sightings across the country in recent years, and I don't think anyone would be bothered if you put down the clown mask.

4. Moana

Like clowns, you're guaranteed to find Disney characters in the costume aisle every single year. Moana has a lot more girl power than the princesses before her though, which is why tons of people want to be her for Halloween.

Could this mean kids are finally letting go of the Frozen fandom?

5. Unicorns

Ah yes, 2017: the year of the Unicorn Frappucinno, and apparently also the year of the unicorn costume.

The animal that never was became super trendy this year for some reason. Vox blames millennials and says it's "what happens when nostalgia collides with social media."

Other uber-popular costumes this year, according to Buzzfeed: mermaids, giraffes (what?), hippies, the kids from Stranger Things, and cast members from Baywatch and Game of Thrones.

And as for lovebirds, Google Trends says these are the most searched couples costumes:

  • Bonnie and Clyde
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Forrest Gump and Jenny
  • Lilo and Stitch
  • Tarzan and Jane
