Prairie Dogs in Uptown is closing, despite a visit from Guy Fieri

It looks like the Guy Fieri effect didn't work.

It looks like Guy Fieri didn't give Prairie Dogs the business boom he normally does.

After two years on the corner of Lake Street and Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis, the handcrafted hotdog and sausage restaurant announced Wednesday it would be closing its doors on Dec. 31.

Why? "Curse of location," the Facebook post says. The corner of Lake and Lyndale has been home to a few other establishments, but only briefly. Among them: the Gray House, Risotto, and a bar called Vino 610, the Pioneer Press says.

"Even after the accolades of the patrons, food writers and a national television network, we found the curse of location to be too strong," Prairie Dogs said in the Facebook post, adding that there was something keeping people away, but they couldn't figure out why. And as fewer customers walked in the door, the bills piled up, and they're being forced to close.

They're looking for a different location to "give Prairie Dogs the life it deserves," and in the meantime they'll be available at U.S. Bank Stadium and maybe a pop-up restaurant, the Facebook post says.

The Fieri effect

Fieri visited Prairie Dogs in May 2016 to shoot an episode of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives for the Food Network, but it wasn't enough to keep Prairie Dogs up and running, despite what's known as the "Guy Fieri Effect."

Fieri has visited Minnesota several times to film the show, including stops at Bayport BBQ, Nye’s Polonaise and Victor’s 1959 Cafe in Minneapolis, the Nook in St. Paul, Donatelli’s in White Bear Lake, Gordy’s Hi-Hat in Cloquet and the Northern Waters Smokehouse in Duluth, among others.

And for the most part, it's been pretty good for the eateries' bottom line, Twin Cities Business Magazine reported. In fact, a Thrillist story from November says a visit from Fieri is known to boost business by 200 percent.
