Prince tapped to headline 20th Essence Festival

Minnesota music legend Prince is helping Essence magazine celebrate its 20th annual festival, the Associated Press reported.

The Purple One has been tapped to headline the celebration in New Orleans. The event, which celebrates black music and culture, is set for July 3-6 at the Superdome.

Prince last performed at the Essence Festival in 2004.

The festival began in 1995 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Essence magazine.

Essence tweeted the news Tuesday and elaborated on the announcement on the magazine's website.

"Welcoming an artist as iconic as Prince back to the Essence Festival for a 20th anniversary performance is incredibly exciting," Essence Communications President Michelle Ebanks said in a statement.
