Prince to make rare guest appearance on Monae's new album

Acclaimed R & B singer Janelle Monae has enlisted some music royalty to play on her hotly anticipated sophomore album.

Billboard reports that Prince will make a rare guest appearance on Monae's forthcoming "The Electric Lady."

Monae and Erykah Badu recently introduced Prince for his Icon Award performance at the recent Billboard Music Awards.

The guest appearance shouldn't take Monae's fan by complete surprise: The singer told the Pioneer Press in an interview that Prince is a "great friend" and "a mentor."

"It's a beautiful thing to have a friend -- someone who cares about your career, and wants to see you go far and to push boundaries and shake up the world -- give whatever they possibly can to the cause," she said.

Monae's new album is due is September.

The singer is also known for her guest vocals on the Fun hit "We Are Young."

Prince and his new band, 3rdEyeGirl, wrapped up last month a tour of small venues on the West Coast, followed by a pair of shows at the Myth Live Event Center in Maplewood.
