It's really freaking hot and the weather is dangerous right now

There's a heat advisory in southern Minnesota, with storms further north.

If you have mercifully not been required to step outside today, news flash: It's hot.

So hot, in fact, that the National Weather Service put out a heat advisory for a chunk of southern Minnesota.

What does that mean? You could more easily get heat exhaustion (not great) or heat stroke (911-level bad, not something you want to mess with) because of the hot temps and high humidity.

Temps are in the 90s for much of the area. Combined with a dewpoint in the 60s and 70s that makes a heat index value of 100-105 degrees.

The advisory's in effect until 7 p.m. And who does it affect? It's the orange-y area in the map below that stretches from the South Dakota border, through Willmar and the Twin Cities.

What you should do

Drink lots of water. Don't do strenuous activities outside. Stay out of the sun in general – and remain indoors around air conditioning when you can.

And of course, know the symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Here's a breakdown from the CDC:

And then there are storms

Directly north of the heat advisory area in Minnesota is a large severe storm watch.

Cutting from west-central Minnesota up through the Iron Range and to North Shore, lime-size hail and wind gusts up to 70 mph are likely. And there's a decent chance for a tornado as well.

If you live in an area that is under a weather watch, keep an eye on the forecast in case the weather turns more severe. A watch can quickly turn into a warning, and when that happens you should seek shelter immediately. Read more about the difference between a watch and a warning here.
