Road construction season is back: Months of Twin Cities traffic headaches start today
The snow has disappeared from our roads, and it's now being replaced by "detour" signs.
Some major road closures in the metro area started on Monday, with construction projects lasting months likely to cause traffic headaches for thousands of commuters.
The most significant of these ramp closures affects Interstate 94, which is being impacted by both the I-35W to Crosstown project and the I-94 Brooklyn Center to Minneapolis work.
Related:
– Closed as of 12:01 a.m. Monday is the eastbound I-394 ramp to westbound I-94, with traffic detoured by Hwys. 100 and 55, and northbound Lyndale Avenue.
Meanwhile the ramp from NB Lyndale onto WB I-94 is also closed.
The closures are likely to be in place until June 8, causing problems in particular from west and northwest metro commuters.
– Further along I-94, the westbound ramp to 11th Street in downtown Minneapolis is closed, with traffic detoured via the Hennepin/Lyndale Avenue, then north on Hennepin to 12th Street.
This is expected to remain in place to mid-June.
– Bike and pedestrian commuters heading downtown should also be aware that the Irene Hixon Whitney Bridge over I-94 between the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden and Loring Park is closed on Monday too.
This will be the case for about 2 months, with cyclists and walkers having to cross Lyndale instead at Oak Grove Street/Vineland Place.
