Sculpture swiped from Minnesota Landscape Arboretum

Author:

A popular sculpture by a world-renown artist was stolen from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chanhassen.

According to a post on the Arboretum's Facebook page, thieves would have needed special equipment to remove the 42-inch bronze sculpture by Paul Granlund from its marble base, which is still in place in a rose garden along Three-Mile Drive.

Called "South Wind," the sculpture depicts a woman facing the wind and is inscribed with the number 10, the Arboretum says. It was stolen last week some time between Thursday night and Saturday morning.

Arboretum officials say they're working with the Carver County Sheriff's office and, as KSTP reports, DNA samples collected at the scene are being analyzed.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked call 952-361-1212.

Paul Granlund

Granlund was a Minneapolis native who went on to a 50-year career as a sculptor until his death in 2003.

His works can be found across Minnesota, including on the State Capitol Grounds, outside the Governor's residence, and at several hospitals, churches, and college campuses.

15 of his sculptures can be found at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, where he was artist-in-residence for 25 years.

Those include Southwind II, which features a woman in a pose similar to the sculpture stolen from the Arboretum last week.
