Attention burger fans, Shake Shack is planning to open a second location in the Twin Cities.

The throwback burger chain has exploded onto the fast food scene the past few years, and after making its entry into Minnesota at the Mall of America last year, it's picked out a spot for a second location.

That location will be the Southdale Center in Edina, provided the plans it will eventually submit to Edina City Council get approved.

The chain plans on building at the northwest corner of the mall property, a 5,000-square-foot outlet on the corner of France Ave. S. and W. 66th Street.

At the moment the plans are preliminary, with artist sketches and an outline of the proposal put forward for Edina's planning commission to pore over. Shake Shack is likely to submit a full proposal later this year, Edina City Council told GoMN.

Shake Shack looks to expand

Gourmet burger chains like Shake Shack and Five Guys have been muscling in on territory dominated for so long by the McDonald's and Burger Kings of the fast food world.

Shake Shack sticks with a small menu, consisting of burgers, hot dogs, crinkle-cut fries, shakes and frozen custard.

The New York-based Shake Shack is still a small endeavor, with Motley Fool noting that as of April it had 64 company-owned outlets in the U.S., though it hopes to expand to 450 going forward.

Motley Fool also suggests Shake Shack struggles in new markets upon opening its second and third restaurants, saying they fail to live up to the hype associated with the first restaurant.

Shake Shack's Mall of America opened in June 2016, with "insanely long lines" reported outside the restaurant.
