Sid Hartman celebrates 95th birthday with 'close personal friends'

Author:

Sid Hartman, the legendary and seemingly ageless Twin Cities sports journalist, is celebrating a big birthday. He turned 95 years old on Sunday, and fans and admirers have been sending him well wishes all day.

Hartman has been working in local media for more than 70 years; he still has a regular column in the Star Tribune and can be heard weekday mornings on WCCO-AM 830 radio.

So what was Hartman doing Sunday morning? Working, as usual – he appeared on WCCO's Sports Huddle radio show as he does every Sunday.

"I’ve always loved what I do," Hartman said, according to WCCO. "It’s not work, it’s fun."

The phone lines were lit up with callers wishing him a happy birthday, including Minnesota Twins player Torii Hunter, Twins general manager Terry Ryan, WCHA commissioner Bill Robertson, hockey legend Lou Nanne, Gopher football coach Jerry Kill and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith.

“I hope I look as good as you when I turn 95,” joked Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, according to WCCO.

Hartman has been feted several times over the years for his long and colorful career. The Minnesota Twins declared May 18, 2014 as “Sid Hartman Day” and named their press conference room after him.

And a bronze statue of Hartman sits on a downtown corner just outside of Target Center.

Hartman celebrated his 70th anniversary with the Star Tribune in November, and says he has no plans to retire.

The Star Tribune has a photo gallery of Sid Hartman through the years.
