St. Louis Park gallery displays Dr. Seuss' hat collection

If you ever wanted to tip your hat to legendary children's book author Dr. Seuss, now you have your chance to do so at a new, unique exhibit at a St. Louis Park art gallery.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal reports that the at Jean Stephen Galleries on 4811 Excelsior Boulevard is among the galleries on a 16-stop national tour displaying hats that belonged to Dr. Suess, a.k.a. Theodor Geisel.

The exhibition -- titled "Hat's Off to Dr. Seuss!" -- is free and runs through Oct. 27.

Among the 26-hat collection being shown to the public for the first time is the cat's hat modeled after Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat," and a Bartholomew Cubbins hat modeled after Seuss' "The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins."

The New York Times says the exhibit, arranged by Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children's Books, is part of an effort to keep the Dr. Seuss brand in front of young readers.

Geisel reportedly started his collection in the 1920s, and at one point amassed about 500 hats.

Not all the hats in the Seuss collection are about child's play. Among the collection on tour are a Nazi field marshal cap and Italian fascist fez.

The Business-Journal has a slideshow of some of hats in the display.
