An old-timey St. Paul candy company is coming out with a new line of sweets – its first since the Great Depression in the 1930s.
Pearson's Candy Company – which is known for classics like the Salted Nut Roll and Nut Goodies – announced on Tuesday a healthier line of sweets called 7th Street Confections. It's named after the street the company is on.
The 7th Street "better for you" goodies are all thin dark chocolate wafers. And they come in four flavors, some of which are pretty surprising: raspberry and quinoa, strawberry, bluberry and almond, and pineapple and toasted coconut.
This new line of snacking chocolate goes along with recent demands to make "healthy" sweets. According to a fact sheet Pearson's sent GoMN, premium (or higher quality and possibly healthier) chocolates are in high demand. This type of candy is the fastest growing in the market. Demand grew five percent in 2016 – beyond that of regular chocolates.
"As consumer's snacking preferences continue to evolve, we needed to be in a position to continually provide innovative confections items and unique flavors," Michael Keller, chief executive of Pearson, said in a statement.
You can pick up a pack (or four) of the new treats at Cub Foods now. They'll also be at Sam's Club, HyVee, and CostCo, the website says.
While the product is still brand new, Pearson's says it's already planning some special holiday flavors. You can expect to see dark chocolate with pretzel and peppermint, white chocolate with raspberry and dark chocolate chips, and milk chocolate with sugar cookie and sprinkles, too.
The candy company was founded in 1909 by P. Edward Pearson and his two brothers.
The Nut Goodie Bar debuted in 1912 and was one of the company's first manufactured products. Then in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, the Salted Nut Roll was introduced.
After that, Pearson's added a few products, but only by purchasing other candy companies. That's how treats like the Mint Pattie and Bit O' Honey came to be part of Pearson's collection.
