Video: World's Greatest French Fries is back at the State Fair

A fire closed the stand for a few days, but it reopened Monday.

The World's Greatest French Fries stand at the Minnesota State Fair is back serving hungry fairgoers after the fire that caused a shutdown last week.

The stand, on the corner of Dan Patch Avenue and Underwood Street, had been closed since a blaze Friday evening.

On Monday, owner Mark Andrew – while standing by a long line for the stand's reopening – spoke with GoMN about the fire. He called it a "freak electrical event on the roof," and said right now they don't know exactly what caused it.

He also credited the State Fair responders and fire department for getting there quickly.

"The thing you think about as an owner isn't your property, the thing you think about is, 'Is everybody OK?'" he said. "And it turned out everybody was OK. After that is't only stuff right? It's not important."

Part of a new roof is in, the fire suppression system is fixed – and they're back selling fries.

The original story from Saturday is below.

State Fair French fry stand closes after fire

A popular Minnesota State Fair food stand is closed following a fire Friday evening.

A fire was reported at World's Greatest French Fries around 7:45 p.m.,the State Fair tells GoMN in a statement. The stand is located on the corner of Dan Patch Avenue and Underwood Street near the Grandstand.

FOX 9 says nine employees were inside working at the time. But they got out without any injuries.

The St. Paul Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. It didn't take very long.

Three surrounding stands – Big Fat Bacon, German Root Beer, and Rainbow Ice Cream – closed for safety reasons, but reopened later that evening.

The source of the fire has not been determined yet. Investigators are also looking at what's been damaged.

The State Fair says the booth will remain closed Saturday. There's no word when it will reopen.
