Storm didn't budge overnight, major boom or bust across MN

Mankato might wind up with a foot of snow, however.

Waking up in the southwest suburbs of the Twin Cities surprised that no snow fell overnight?

The snowstorm that was supposed to drop anywhere from 4-8 inches in places like Litchfield, Hutchinson, Glencoe, Gaylord, Shakopee, New Prague, Faribault and Rochester simply didn't budge overnight.

Look at these three separate radar images from 11:30 p.m., 4:18 a.m. and 6:59 a.m. – the snow line never moves.

snow didn't move all night

So what happened? According to MPR meteorologist Paul Huttner, dry air on the system's eastern side eroded the east side of the snow zone.

Where it did snow it really snowed.

The National Weather Service, as of 6:30 a.m., had received reports of 7 inches in Redwood Falls and is anticipating much of southwestern and south-central Minnesota to finish with 8-12 inches by the time it wraps up this afternoon, which is actually quite a bit more than the NWS was predicting.

All along the NWS warned that this was a tricky storm to forecast, and it's evident when you see three maps side-by-side from Friday morning, midday and evening.

nws totals

As you can see, they were calling for 8+ inches in southern Minnesota early in the day before backing off, meaning the forecast became less accurate as the day went on in terms of targeting where the heaviest snow would fall.

No travel down south

MnDOT is advising no travel in areas hit the hardest because of reduced visibilities and blowing and drifting on the roads. Areas shaded in purple in the map below is where no travel is advised.

Anyway, that's weather for ya'. One day (Thursday night) the National Weather Service is saying the western 'burbs might get a foot of snow and the next day you have to go 65-80 miles to to find ANY snow.

Next up, a dumping of rain Sunday into Monday.
