The Hennepin County Board has approved a $450,000 grant to help with the environmental cleanup at a former food processing site in southeast Minneapolis, Finance & Commerce reports. Surly Brewing Co. now has about 80 percent of the $2.5 million it is seeking to develop the property.

“This is a big step in the process and will allow Surly to move forward in the next steps to potentially acquire and redevelop the site,” Surly said in a statement. “Now it’s on to the next steps in investigation and design.”

The Brooklyn Center-based company wants to build a $20 million, 60,000-square-foot detestation brewery near the University of Minnesota.

Earlier this month, the Metropolitan Council provided the craft brewer $545,300. Twin Cities Business reports the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development also awarded $1 million in funding.

DEED expects the new development to create 67 jobs and retain 15 jobs, according to a news release.
