Surprise! Prince quietly releases new single online – listen to it here

This article may be the first you've heard of Prince's new single, because the Minnesota music icon didn't bother promoting it before releasing it on Soundcloud Wednesday.

Called "HARDROCKLOVER" (no, we're not yelling at you; the all-caps spelling is the work of the funk maestro), it's delightfully familiar territory for Prince, who sings eyebrow-raising lyrics over a shredding guitar solo and heavy synths.

City Pages called it a "welcome return" to the genre that made the artist famous – his last two songs were serious ballads about unrest in Baltimore following the shooting of Freddie Gray.

The paper also noted a bit of confusion in HARDROCKLOVER's release Wednesday morning; it mysteriously disappeared from Soundcloud about 42 minutes after it was uploaded, only to return to the site later – "classic Prince," City Pages observed.

There was no publicity leading up to the release of the new track, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Rolling Stone notes the song is the third "standalone" release for the Purple One this year, and that it was a collaboration with 3rdEyeGirl, his backing band.
