Target's closing its special food lab this summer.

In case you didn't know – Target opened its Food + Future lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a little over a year ago. It was supposed to be a "multi-year collaboration" with Massachusetts Institute of Technology's (MIT) Media Lab to figure out the best practices for growing and selling food.

However, it looks like that's ending a bit early. Earlier this month, Target told the Business Journals it was looking to sell the venture.

But on Friday, the Minneapolis-based retailer told the Star Tribune it didn't secure a buyer so it's shutting the lab down instead. It'll officially close in June.

What exactly did the lab do?

The whole idea of the Food + Future lab was to innovate, and figure out better ways to use science and technology in the food industry.

The lab did things like scan fruits with special devices to see how fresh they were. The idea was to see if there was a way to easily price older produce less than fresher items.

It evaluated different ways of displaying food labels, and worked on a scanning device that'd allow customers to see exactly what is in a product and how fresh it is. Read more about those projects here.

The lab also explored urban farming and the idea of growing produce within stores.
