After its most successful year ever, the Animal Humane Society says it will close one of its shelters.

The nonprofit said Monday it will shut down its Buffalo location on Nov. 1, noting the decision comes after "careful consideration" and adding it will help them see success in the future.

The Animal Humane Society did some strategic planning and assessed its five locations, finding the Buffalo shelter was the most underutilized. It only serves about 2,100 animals a year, which is about 9 percent of the nonprofit's total placements.

The animals the shelter does serve won't be forgotten. The nonprofit says they'll be cared for and placed through the four other Animal Humane Society locations, as well as other shelters in the area.

And no one is losing their job. The Buffalo shelter employs 19 people, and they'll all be offered "comparable roles" at other sites. Plus, the nonprofit is encouraging the 64 people who volunteer at the Buffalo shelter to continue volunteering at its other locations.

It was a really successful year

The Animal Humane Society says it had a record-setting number of adoptions in the past year, helping 23,565 animals find new homes.

The nonprofit's website shows more than 95 percent of the animals it was caring for in 2016 were reunited with their owners, adopted or released to other animal organizations.

That's up from 2007, when 59 percent of animals were released.

The Star Tribune says it also had a record $22 million budget last year.
