The Walker Art Center got a $1 million grant to bring nine new contemporary art performance pieces to Minneapolis.

The grant comes from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It will fund a 3 1/2-year multidisciplinary art initiative that kicks off this month, the museum announced Tuesday.

The initiative includes the commission of nine artists whose work focuses on performance, performing arts and visual arts.

The Walker has already announced three of the nine artists that will be presented in "new, large-scale events," including: Jason Moran, a jazz/visual artist; Maria Hassabi, a dance/living installation artist; and Laure Prouvost, a video/performance artist.

Hassabi's work will be the first announced piece to come to the Walker through this initiative, with the Star Tribune reporting it will open Feb. 8, 2017. Provoust will be "in residence" at the Walker this summer preparing a video installation and theater piece that will make its debut in January 2018, the paper adds.

Moran is set to come to the Walker in the spring of 2018, the Star Tribune notes.

“Contemporary artists have blurred the lines between artistic disciplines for decades, and museums and performing art centers like ourselves must remain responsive to these evolving practices,” Olga Viso, the executive director at the Walker, said in the news release.

The grant will also fund a new research program that looks into these evolving practices. The program will culminate with a presentation of the program's findings during a national meeting of artists, curators and scholars in the winter of 2019, the Walker notes.
