A new project celebrating the fertile Minnesota music scene is on its way.

Later this year, Hennepin County Library will launch MnSpin, a new online music streaming and download resource.

MnSpin will start as a collection of up to 40 albums strictly created by Minnesota musicians. When it launches, anyone will be able to stream music from the platform, and library cardholders can download songs free.

Since it doesn't cost anything to sign up for a library card, MnSpin (pronounced min-spin) is essentially a completely free local music discovery platform.

“Minnesota is such an incubator for musical artists,” Hennepin County Library Director Lois Langer Thompson said in a release.

“MnSpin is an opportunity for the music community to have its music heard and for all music lovers to have access to the rich talents of local musicians.”

Submit a song

Of course, in order to provide the service, Hennepin County Library needs a catalogue of local music – so they're looking for submissions.

Have you produced an EP or full length album in any genre in the last five years? Do you live or regularly perform in the Minnesota region? If so, the library definitely wants you to submit one song for consideration here.

Minnesota artists and bands of all genres – from classical to hip-hop – are encouraged to send in their stuff.

A panel of local music experts and library staff – including Maria Jette, Jessica Rau, Jon Jon Scott, and J.D. Steele – will review all of the submissions, and invite selected artists to make one album available through the online platform.

The submission period is open from Wednesday, July 5 to Wednesday, August 2. Artists who are chosen will sign a license agreement and receive $200.

The library plans to expand this pilot project to offer additional submission opportunities in the future.

MnSpin is possible thanks to a grant from the Friends of the Hennepin County Library. Music lovers will be able to connect to this new collection through www.hclib.org/arts-culture (the link isn't live yet).
