Attention book lovers: finalists for this year's Minnesota Book Awards were announced this weekend.

There are 36 finalists this year, competing in nine categories: Children's Literature, General Nonfiction, Genre Fiction, Memoir and Creative Nonfiction, Middle Grade Literature, Minnesota Nonfiction, Novel and Short Story, Poetry, and Young Adult Literature.

Finalists were chosen by a group of 27 judges – writers, teachers, librarians, and other members of Minnesota's literary community.

Some of the notables include Minneapolis writer Louise Erdrich, who already has five Minnesota Book Awards and is nominated for her novel "LaRose," New York Times bestseller Alison McGhee, and Benjamin Percy, who writes the Green Arrow and Teen Titans series at DC Comics.

As far as publishers, the Minnesota Historical Society Press and the University of Minnesota Press each have four finalists. And two of the finalists this year are self-published authors, which the Star Tribune says has never happened before.

Here's the complete list of finalists (stars indicate Minnesota publishers).

Winners will be announced at the 29th Annual Minnesota Book Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 8, at the InterContinental Hotel Saint Paul Riverfront. A reception begins at 6:30 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $40 - $55 and available by visiting www.thefriends.org or calling 651-222-3242.

More about the awards

The Minnesota Book Awards were created in 1988 by the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Saint Paul Public Library.

Besides the awards ceremony each spring, Minnesota Book Awards offers programs and events around the state throughout the year, including author readings, discussions, pub quizzes and food events.
