3M was recently named the best place to work for millennials, and now it's among the world's best multinational companies.

The Maplewood-based company is No. 24 on the Great Place to Work/Fortune list released Wednesday. It names the top 25 global companies known to treat employees equally – regardless of where they are, what they do, and how long they've been there.

Google came in at No. 1 on the list for the fourth year in a row, Fortune says. Acuity Insurance ranked No. 2, followed by The Boston Consulting Group at No. 3, Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. at No. 4, and Quicken Loans rounded out the top five.

How they came up with the rankings

Great Place to Work, a consultancy firm that's partnered with Fortune, analyzed thousands of employee surveys from hundreds of global companies to come up with the best global companies, Fortune says.

To qualify for consideration, a company had to previously be ranked on at least five national best workplaces lists (3M has earned 15 Best Workplace titles since 2011); have a minimum of 5,000 employees worldwide (3M has 89,753 employees); and 40 percent of those employees have to be based outside of the country of the company's headquarters (for 3M, 53,473 work internationally), a news release says.

"We know investing in a high-trust workplace culture results in distinct, tangible business benefits and provides a fun place to work," Marlene McGrath, 3M senior vice president of Human Resources, said in the release. “Engaged employees are key to driving innovation and making a difference around the world."
