Top Gun: Popular Duluth Airshow receives sky-high honors

Look, up in the sky – if you're in Duluth in 2016, it might just be one of the best-run air shows in the country.

The Duluth Air and Aviation Expo, a nonprofit organization, has been recognized with some serious accolades by the International Council of Air Shows. The Council handed out just four of its coveted Pinnacle Awards to civilian air shows in the mid-sized category, and the biennial Duluth show swept up half of them, according to The Northland's News Center.

The organization bestows the honor on extraordinarily well managed shows, and those that overcome logistical challenges with creative solutions. The Duluth Air Expo won its two awards for donating proceeds to charity, and for its business ethics, reports KDAL. Reports indicate the show has raised more than $350,000 for local charity groups to date.

It's the inaugural year of the Pinnacle Award, according to the council's website.

But the Duluth Expo's past events indicate they know how to put on a good show, too. The U.S. Navy's Blue Angels performed last summer, and crowds got to enjoy the Fagen Fighters, a collection of fully operational World War II-era aircraft, to name just two attractions.

According to the Duluth Airshow's Facebook page, the organization is currently planning its 2016 show. There's no word yet on what's in store, but it will undoubtedly include some topflight talent.

In the meantime, the Airshow is celebrating their awards with a message of gratitude on Facebook:
