Uptown Theatre: Where the marquee is even better than the movies

Note: The movies are good too ... but its marketing is even better.

Just to clarify, the Uptown Theatre actually shows pretty darn good movies – we just think the way it markets them is even better.

If you've spent time strolling, bussing, biking or driving along Hennepin Avenue you'll be familiar with the art deco movie theater's irreverent marquee.

Its puns, jokes and pop culture references are spot on, with this week's listing for "Isle of Dogs" (pictured above) up there with its best work.

Its efforts have attracted the attention from Hollywood itself, thanks to this famous exchange with Oscar nominated actress Anna Kendrick in 2016.

The movie theater celebrated its 100th birthday that same year and thanks to its neon tower sign remains the true center of Uptown.

The historic, single-screen theater is a treat to visit, but even if you can't make it to a showing, there's still plenty to enjoy when merely passing by.
