Video: The sun put on a swirly, gyrating show
There's a lot going on on the sun's surface.
NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory released a video that gives us a close-up look at what exactly is happening up there – and it's pretty cool.
Check out this video:
A close-up video of a small area of the sun highlighted three active regions, but the one in the center caught our attention the most. Over half a day this active region sent dark swirls of plasma and bright magnetic arches twisting and turning above it. More: http://go.nasa.gov/2jSQmi8

NASA says competing magnetic forces created three gyrating active regions on the sun. The area in the center caught scientists' attention the most, with NASA saying: "Over half a day [on Jan. 20], this active region sent dark swirls of plasma and bright magnetic arches twisting and turning above it."
