That video is of Herman, the tortoise, being woken up from a long slumber and very, very cold slumber – he hibernated in a shoebox in a fridge for the past four months.
It's a bizarre concept – can you imagine having your beloved dog or cat sitting in a fridge for one-third of the year, knowing they're in there, but sleeping the whole time?
Anyway, the video was done by Neil Slorance. He is not the only one though whose tortoise sleepy time drew lots of attention.
Why does this need to be done? Hibernation is just what many do. It's an "important part of the life cycle," the Tortoise Protection Group says.
Some, but not all tortoises hibernate. Park Vets says tropical tortoises and very small ones should not be put in hibernation.
The Tortoise Trust website has an entire section explaining what to do, and what not do do, when preparing your tortoise for hibernation.
