Kindergarten teacher Sonya Romero is an educator to some and an example to all.

The Albuquerque teacher begins each class by asking if her students have eaten – and pays for their food if they have not. She is also fostering two of the students at her school, KOAT reports.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres recognized Romero's efforts earlier this year and surprised her with $20,000.

As it turns out, DeGeneres had one more trick up her sleeve on Wednesday's show.
