Web Catch: Surfer fights off shark by punching it in the back

Mick Fanning, a three-time surfing world champion, fought off a shark during a surfing competition Sunday – and it was broadcast on live television.

Fanning told FOX Sports, “I punched him in the back!” after he felt something get stuck in his leg rope while surfing at an event at Jeffreys Bay in South Africa – an area known for shark attacks.

Luckily, the Australian surfer wasn't hurt when the shark approached him from behind, the Sydney Morning Herald notes.

Watch the full video of the encounter here.

The competition was canceled for the day, World Surf League notes.
