Chris Thile made his debut as the permanent host of A Prairie Home Companion Saturday, and the reviews are in.

Broadcasting live from the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, the bluegrass musician welcomed guests including Jack White onto the stage, in the first Prairie Home since Garrison Keillor's retirement.

The Pioneer Press was impressed by Thile, who likened taking over from Keillor as being asked to be "a Jedi master, Shamu the killer whale and a starting pitcher for the Cubs," with the newspaper saying he succeeded in putting his own stamp on the show while trying to maintain its traditions.

Unsurprisingly given his time as a member of Nickel Creek and the Punch Brothers, there was a heavier emphasis on music than under Keillor.

"If there’s a significant difference between Keillor’s version and Thile’s, it’s that a show that used to be about stories, skits and songs is now more about songs with some skits and a dash of storytelling," the newspaper notes.

The Star Tribune says Thile seems "right at home" as host, with the Californian native making Minnesotans feel at home with references to the Vikings, Lynx, Prince and Dylan, as well as harking back to Keillor's Prairie Home by talking about the fall and its traditions.

He also took shots at both presidential candidates – something the newspaper notes Keillor "was wont to do" and while there was no "News from Lake Wobegon" monologue, there was a commercial for Powdermilk Biscuits – a creation of Keillor's.

Here's how people reacted to the show on Twitter.
