Where to celebrate Record Store Day 2016 in St. Paul

Record Store Day in the Twin Cities has evolved from a fun excuse to shop for exclusive vinyl records into a full-blown holiday, with nearly every shop hosting DJs, in-store performances from bands, special giveaways and more. We've got the skinny on what's happening at St. Paul's many record stores this Saturday, April 16.

Barely Brothers Records

Barely Brothers is a newer vinyl-only record store to St. Paul, co-founded in 2014 by former KFAI DJ Mike Elias. They're slated to open at 9 a.m., although Elias told us that he may open the door a few minutes earlier if their set-up goes well.

While you're filling up on an armful of official RSD releases at their store, make sure to check out the whole suite of five in-store performances that Barely Bros. is offering, including a set from buzzy-worthy folk-rockers Tabah. Bands are slated to perform from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. If Barely Bros starts to run low on supply, you can walk a couple of blocks down University to Agharta.

Agharta Records

Like their neighbors at Barely Brothers, Agharta is part of St. Paul's resurgence of small, neighborhood-oriented record shops that specialize in vinyl. According to their website, Agharta will be open at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Agharta promises that they've "ordered big" on RSD releases this year, and they're also hosting DJ sets all day and an in-store performance from local bluegrass trio Depot Creek at 11 a.m.

Cheapo Discs - St.Paul

Cheapo Discs in St. Paul is a well-loved Snelling Avenue institution, stocking all manner of vinyl, CDs, tapes and more. With three stores in the metro area and large, warehouse-sized locations, you can expect Cheapo to have a deep selection of RSD releases.

Cheapo - St. Paul will be opening an hour early at 9 a.m. so early-rising record hunters can get their fix. They also plan to showcase a run of special new and used records, in addition to the official RSD merch. If all that crate digging works up an appetite, Cheapo will be serving brats in the parking lot.

Eclipse Records

Eclipse is one of St. Paul's most tenacious vinyl shops, currently based in a lovely new storefront in downtown St. Paul. They plan on opening an hour earlier than normal at 10 a.m.

On Record Store Day, Eclipse is promising "the shortest lines in the city" in addition to their well-curated selection of vinyl treasures. DJs will be spinning in the shop all day, and Eclipse will also be giving away an official screen-printed RSD poster while supplies last. There's even some rumors about a parking-lot petting zoo in the works.
