Where to celebrate Record Store Day in greater Minnesota

Author:

We've already told you the best places to ring in Record Store Day 2016 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, but why should the city folk get to have all the fun? Minnesota is full of awesome record shops, from the north shore all the way down to Mankato, and we've got a list of all of the must-visit spots for this year's celebration on Saturday, April 16.

Cheapo Discs - Blaine

All of Cheapo's three metro-area locations will be opening an hour earlier than usual at 9 a.m. While Cheapo-Blaine doesn't plan on having an in-store performance or special events like their sister stores in Minneapolis and St. Paul, their shop's sizable premises means that they've been able to buy big on the RSD releases you crave.

Discland - Bloomington

While Discland is a multimedia store that also stocks movies, video games and novelties, they've gotten their hands on a decent sized chunk of Record Store Day merchandise as well. Discland opens at 10 a.m. and plans to showcase their RSD stock on a special display table.

Down in the Valley - Gold Valley, Crystal, Maple Grove

All three Down in the Valley locations are participating in Record Store Day this year, and they're boasting a massive amount official releases as well as teasing some special U.K.-exclusive selections.

Down in the Valley will be open at 9 a.m. at all locations, but you might want to show up even earlier. According to the store, last year some of their die-hard customers started lining up at 11 p.m. the night before. All three Down in the Valley locations are also offering refreshments from Valley Pastries, gift bags, vinyl and ticket giveaways, and 20 percent off on used vinyl and CDs, storewide.

Electric Fetus - Duluth

Just like their better-known Minneapolis location, Duluth's Electric Fetus doesn't cut any corners. They'll open their doors at 9 a.m. and host a four-band in-store showcase that includes Minneapolis-based rock 'n' roll madman Mark Mallman.

In addition to a generous helping of exclusive releases, Electric Fetus-Duluth has planned in-store giveaways and a smorgasbord of food and drink sponsors, including Duluth Coffee Company and Lake Superior Bakery for the morning, and Pizza Luce and Bent Paddle Brewery once the day gets underway.

Go Johnny Go - White Bear Lake

Go Johnny Go is the original headquarters of Twin Cities record maven John Kass's vinyl empire, which also includes Hi-Fi Hair & Records and Dead Media in south Minneapolis and the newly-minted Flashlight Vinyl in Northeast. While all of those stores have big sales or in-store performances planned, Go Johnny Go will be taking it easy this year. Kass told us that he's is in the process of moving and re-organizing a significant amount of his stock, so the store will be focusing on local RSD releases.

Mill City Sound - Hopkins

Mill City Sound has invited DJs from KFAI's "Vinyl Voices" to comb through their basement archives and unearth rare gems to soundtrack your shopping experience from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doors open an hour before the DJs start spinning, but Mill City Sound will provide cupcakes and "very strong coffee." Starting at noon, they'll bring in refreshments from Pizza Luce and their Main Street neighbors at LTD Brewing.

In addition to official RSD releases, expect hourly drawings for everything from rare private-stash vinyl to a pair of high-end powered loudspeakers. While supplies last, every purchase will also come with a record-cleaning towel.

Mother's - Moorhead

Mother's is Moorhead's oldest record store and one of the town's longest-operating retail outlets, and they're hosting a store-wide blowout.

Mother's promises snacks and refreshments, as well as drawings and door prizes to entice Fargo/Moorhead vinyl lovers. They also plan to bring in big discounts on much of their inventory, and will host four in-store performances, including one area performer and former "The Voice" guest, singer-songwriter Blind Joe.

Tri-Sound Local - South St. Paul

Tri-Sound Local is a relatively new dual-duty music shop serving South St. Paul. Partnered with instrument store Minnesota Music Factory, Tri-Sound specializes in new and used vinyl, with a great selection of local releases. They'll have all the RSD exclusives they could get their hands on for sale.
