Where's your story? How Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook stack up

Who's using what? Which do people prefer?

"Stories" are everywhere lately. We're talking about those little round bubbles that show up on your social media apps that allow you to post a string of photos and videos for just one day. By tomorrow, the posts are all gone and you get to do it all over again.

Snapchat started this trend in 2013, then Instagram followed in 2016, and Facebook joined the crowed just last month.

But who's using what, and is one better than the other?

Data by TechCrunch, Mashable and the Morning Consult examined a bunch of social media users and here's what they found.

Instagram has the most stories

Instagram's stories feature hasn't even been out for a year, and it already has more active users than Snapchat.

According to TechCrunch, 200 million users a day use Instagram stories – either by posting or looking at someone else stories.

However, it really only makes sense that Instagram has more stories users considering it has 600 million users compared to Snapchat's 161 million.

Snapchat is more popular with the kids

Well, not really kids. But 18 to 29-year-olds seem to prefer it.

The Morning Consult surveyed 2,202 adults and found that 37 percent of those people use Snapchat’s version at least once a day. About 25 percent say they use Instagram's stories that often.

But people favor Facebook's idea

Facebook's stories feature is still super early, and a lot of people aren't using it yet. However, social media users seem to really like the idea of it.

The Morning Consult found that 43 percent of people 18 to 29 say they'll likely use it. And 53 percent of people age 30 to 44 say they'd use Facebook's feature.

Facebook is also seeing a significant increase in younger users again. About 87 percent of millennials surveyed have an account. And 57 percent of young people say they're using Facebook more now than they were six months ago.

Not everyone's a fan

According to Mashable, 46 percent of social media users want nothing to do with stories.

And 18 to 29-year-olds are about twice as likely to use the features than those aged 45 to 54.

Data shows 13 percent of people don't have any opinions on the various apps' stories features.

What's the difference?

While each app's stories feature is basically the same, there are a few differences. Like Facebook and Snapchat both have face recognition so you can add funny animated masks to your face.

Instagram doesn't have that though.

All three now allow you to upload photos not taken through the app. However, Snapchat puts a white box around uploaded photos to make sure people know they aren't real snaps.

Twitter doesn't have a stories feature yet. According to Morning Consult, people 18 to 29 aren't as into Twitter as they are the other apps. Sixty-nine percent of people surveyed between 18 and 29 say they check Facebook daily. More than half check Instagram and Snapchat. And 43 percent use Twitter every day.
