Where's Woody? Stars on the ground shooting movie around the metro

Minnesota movie fans won't have to go to the theater to spot stars this summer. Production has begun on the Fox Searchlight Pictures movie "Wilson," with the principal photography now underway in St. Paul and the surrounding area.

The film stars Oscar nominees Woody Harrelson and Laura Dern. Variety said that actresses Judy Greer and Cheryl Hines are also in the cast. The movie is based on a graphic novel by Daniel Clowes, who is writing the screenplay.

The plot has Harrelson, as Wilson, reuniting with his estranged wife (Laura Dern) and discovering he has a teenage daughter whom he has never met. The Star Tribune said Harrelson, described as looking "scruffy," has been spotted around town.

The newspaper said star spotters should keep their eyes peeled at numerous local landmarks that will be used over the course of the six-week shoot. Those local locations include Lake Minnetonka, Como Zoo, the Lowertown St. Paul Farmers’ Market and East Lake St. in Minneapolis.

Lucinda Winter, who heads the state's Film and TV board, said the movie will pump $6 million into the local economy.

The Pioneer Press noted that the crew struggled with heavy rain earlier this week while shooting at the St. Paul Farmers' Market, dressed up to look like an outdoor flea market.

City Pages added that this is not the first time that Harrelson has worked in the Twin Cities. In 1999, he directed a production of his play Furthest from the Sun at what was then Theatre de la Jeune Lune.
