The Science Museum of Minnesota hoodie from Stranger Things 2 is quickly turning into the Tickle Me Elmo of the 2017 holiday season.
In case you missed it (don't worry, no spoilers), the first episode of season two of Netflix's hit series shows Dustin wearing a sweater with the museum's logo on it.
Some Minnesota fans noticed, and the news blew up online, turning the "Thunder Lizard" shirt into the must-have item on everybody's list. The Science Museum was flooded with inquiries about the brontosaurus hoodie, and announced plans to bring it back ASAP.
But waiting for anything is not something people do anymore, and vendors on third-party sites are taking advantage of our impatience.
That means some people could be walking around in the hoodie already, before the Science Museum (which says it never got a heads up that the shirt would appear on the show) ever had a chance to get them out on the shelves.
Why you should hold out for the real thing
You'll be able to buy the hoodie from the Science Museum "in a few days," according to a Facebook post on Wednesday. Kim Ramsden, a spokeswoman for the museum, told GoMN on Tuesday they're finalizing details with a vendor to build an online storefront.
Once it's up, there will be adult and child sizes of the purple brontosaurus hoodie available, Ramsden said.
"Many of us who work here are huge fans of the Stranger Things series. We are thrilled by the opportunity to offer apparel that delights and inspires Science Museum of Minnesota fans across the world," she added.
And yes, fake versions of the shirt are already available online, but there's a very important reason you should hold out for the Science Museum to reproduce it:
For the love of science.
Buying the authentic sweatshirt helps support the museum, because a portion of the proceeds from items sold in the museum's gift shop go right back into museum programming and educational opportunities.
"Buying the Brontosaurus hoodie from us will come with a certificate of authenticity that it was produced by the Science Museum of Minnesota. As a nonprofit, all orders will directly advance our mission to empower people to use science to make their lives better," Ramsden told GoMN.
So sure, you could be one of the first people to rock the shirt if you buy it on Etsy.
But if you're a true nerd who values science – like our heroes Dustin, Mike, Will, and Lucas – you'll wait (anxiously) for the real deal.
