Wild Onion is closing in St. Paul, with Red Rabbit opening

But it'll be at the expense of Wild Onion.

Major news in the St. Paul dining scene, which is about to get its first Red Rabbit.

But it will be at the expense of Grand Avenue staple Wild Onion, which announced on Saturday it'll be closing at the end of March.

In an announcement on Facebook, Wild Onion says the business will be taken over by Luke Shimp, whose Red Cow/Red Rabbit chain continues to grow.

"For some 20 years, we have had a lot of fun—provided great food, good drinks, entertainment and camaraderie," Wild Onion said on Facebook. "Sadly every run eventually comes to an end. The Wild Onion’s run is ending March 31, 2018.

"The final 6 weeks for the Wild Onion will be focused on showing appreciation and thanks to our loyal customers, neighbors, and past & present staff for all their support and patronage of our restaurant. Food and drink specials everyday! Thanks for the memories!"

It'll mark Shimp's second Red Rabbit location and first in St. Paul. The original Red Rabbit has been a popular presence in the Minneapolis North Loop since it opened in December 2016.

There are now four Red Cows, with the original location on West 50th Street in southwest Minneapolis since joined by restaurants in the North Loop, Uptown and St. Paul.
