Winners of 27th annual Minnesota Book Awards announced

Author:

A book about the life of Minnesota's first female Supreme Court Justice is among the winners of the 27th Annual Minnesota Book Awards.

"Her Honor: Rosalie Wahl and the Minnesota Women’s Movement," by Lori Strurdevant, was one of eight books recognized at a Saturday night ceremony in St. Paul, where a crowd of about 800 gathered to honor the winning authors, the Star Tribune reports.

The paper notes that three of the writers – including Strurdevant – are previous winners of the Minnesota Book Award, which is organized by the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library.

According to the Book Awards website, "Her Honor" explores the life and times of Rosalie Wahl, who, as a 38-year-old mother of four in the early 1960s, decided to go to law school. The decision would lead to a distinguished legal career and a seat in Minnesota's high court.

During her time as a justice, she led two Supreme Court task forces whose goal was to study race and gender bias in the state's judicial system.

Wahl retired from her post in 1994, having spent nearly two decades there. She died in 2013 at the age of 88.
