Zach Sobiech's mother publishes memoir about her son's life

Laura Sobiech, mother of the late singer Zach Sobiech, has written a memoir about her son, Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom's Small Prayer in a Big Way.

Zach Sobiech, who died of Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer, was known for his song, “Clouds," an inspirational tune about his battle against the disease.

"Zach's story is not just about music. It's a testament to what can happen when you live as if each day might be your last. It's a story about the human spirit," Laura Sobiech told KARE.

Sobiech was just at 18 when he died. But before he passed away,“Clouds," went viral.

The success turned the young singer into a "global role model for others battling serious illness," Billboard reports.

Sobiech was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in 2009 at age 14. He underwent several operations and bouts of chemotherapy. But in May 2012 his doctors told him that the cancer had spread and that he only had a few months to live.

Zach's mother signed a deal after his death.

She told the Pioneer Press she hoped the book would be inspirational.

"After Zach died, I started writing," Laura Sobiech says. "I've been thinking about writing for a long time because I think there is a story underneath what everybody has heard that should be told, too. I've always been more interested in the spiritual side of things and that thread of what God did for us and for Zach, so that was the story that I wanted to tell."

Sobiech will sign books at the Mall of America rotunda on Sunday, May 4 from 1 – 4 p.m. Special guests include performances by Sammy Brown, Zach's former bandmate, and KS95 DJs who will host a Q&A with Sobiech.
