It has been a big year for local afrocentric funk-rap-R&B collective ZULUZULUU.

Their debut album What's Price? is getting buzz, the band was just tapped to represent Minnesota's music scene in Canada, and now they might just be the next local band to go national.

Minneapolis' alt-weekly City Pages announced the results of its annual Picked to Click critics' poll this morning – a poll that has long a barometer for local musicians ready for a big breakout.

Formed by rapper and former Picked to Click finalist Greg Grease, ZULUZULUU's music is a kaleidoscopic of forward-thinking hip-hop production with nods to classic soul and funk. The six-piece group also maintains a bold afrocentric stance in their look and lyrics, apparent in City Pages' accompanying profile of the band.

Other standouts from the 10-band Picked to Click list include runner up Tony Peachka, rising R&B songstress Ness Nite, and left-of-center rapper Finding Novyon.

Picked to Click's past picks

Picked to Click's electorate of critics, musicians, record store owners, and DJs has proved to be surprisingly consistent at predicting future success.

Recent Atlantic Records signee and newly minted MTV host Lizzo can credit some of her success to back-to-back Picked to Click wins in 2013 and 2012.

2015's winner Bad Bad Hats just landed a song on Shameless. And 2014 winner Allan Kingdom saw a collaboration with Kanye West and Grammy nominations land in his lap just a year after his win.

Looking back further, Picked to Click's history of predictions is somewhat spottier, but still full of future big names. Low (1994), The Honeydogs (1995), Semisonic (1996), Atmosphere (1997/1998), Mason Jennings (1999), Har Mar Superstar (2000), Haley Bonar (2003), Brother Ali (2003), POS/Doomtree (2004), Caroline Smith (2009), Night Moves and Howler (2011) have all been highly touted by Picked to Click.
