Today's Google Doodle celebrates the birth of hip-hop

Learn how hip-hop originated while becoming a low-key turntable master on Google

Google's homepage today has an homage to the pioneers of hip-hop and your very own set of turntables.

By clicking the Doodle, you will quickly learn that 44 years ago today, DJ Kool Herc threw a back to school kickback in the Bronx that sparked hip-hop music and culture as we know it.

DJ Kool Herc and other early DJs like Grandmaster Flash used two turntables to blend sounds and extend the length of instrumental breaks. Creating a longer "break" provided more time to dance and a steady beat for an MC to rap over.

After receiving a mini history lesson on hip-hop, the tables are turned over to you, along with a crate of records and 10 missions to accomplish. Some of the tasks include scratching a record, pausing a record and mixing two records in the same key.

Finding records in the same key is made easy to those not so musically inclined. When sifting through the digital crate of records the key, BPM, release date and where it was sampled is clearly listed. For example, you can find out that the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets," was not only sampled in The Notorious B.I.G.'s “Big Poppa," but was also used in Chance the Rapper's “Juke Juke” and Common's “Breaker 1/9.”

Additionally, as you create original mixes with classic records and accomplish the set of missions, other facts about hip-hop history appear. Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" is soaring on charts today, but if you spend enough time exploring the Doodle you'll read about how Roxanne Shanté was one of the first female MCs to make a hip-hop hit back in 1984.

Overall, the historical facts are on point and the turntable mixing is just plain fun.
