3 Twin Cities restaurants, 8 chefs nominated for James Beard Awards

The semifinalists for the prestigious awards have been announced.

The semifinalists for the 2020 James Beard Awards are out, and Minnesota is once again well-represented.

Twin Cities restaurants and chefs are nominated in six national categories, while five chefs are in the running for the Best Chef: Midwest award.

Among those nominated is Gavin Kaysen, a two-time James Beard winner who is in the running for the Outstanding Chef for Spoon & Stable, but whose new restaurant next door, Demi, is up for Best New Restaurant.

Demi opened its doors a year ago and has been met with rave reviews for its $135-a-head, two-and-a-half-hour tasting menu experience.

Another Spoon & Stable chef, Diane Moua, has picked up her latest James Beard semifinal nomination, for Outstanding Pastry Chef.

Elsewhere, Colita at Penn Ave. S. and 54th, has been nominated for Outstanding Bar Program on the back of the cocktail selection created by nationally acclaimed mixologist Marco Zappia.

For the second year running, Restaurant Alma in the Marcy Holmes neighborhood is up for Outstanding Restaurant, while Rikki Giambruno of Hyacinth is a semifinalist for Rising Star Chef for the second year in a row.

Meanwhile, these Twin Cities chefs will duke it out with counterparts from other Midwestern states for the right to be named Best Chef: Midwest, with Hai Truong of St. Paul's Ngon Bistro picking up his first nomination.
