5 things to do in the Twin Cities this weekend: 1/27-29

P.O.S. album release, 50 Cent at Chicago Lake Liquors, and more!

P.O.S. Chill, dummy album release show

If you think about it, it's pretty incredible that we're getting another P.O.S. record at all. After a scary bout with failing kidneys that threatened to derail his career, Stefon Alexander has bounced back with Chill, dummy. His in-house production ranges from the incisive, punk-influenced beats that he became known for to slinky, danceable bass lines that register as some of the most pop-friendly work of his career. Staging the show in the relatively small confines of the 7th Street Entry should make for an intense experience.

TwinsFest

It's never too early to get excited about baseball. Hell, there are only 65 days until the Twins throw out the first pitch at Target Field against the Royals. TwinsFest is the perfect way to get your dose of summertime in January, with more than 60 former and current Twins ballplayers hanging out and signing autographs, plus tons of fun interactive activities for kids of all ages. New to this year's TwinsFest is Twins Tap, a beer garden featuring classic arcades, pub and yard games, and music courtesy of Go Radio.

50 Cent

Fiddy isn't just stopping through the Twin Cities to rock a show at the Myth, he's also making an appearance at Chicago Lake Liquors to promote EFFEN Vodka. That's right folks, you can stop in to the south Minneapolis liquor store from 3-4 p.m. Saturday to pick up a signed bottle of Dutch vodka and take an exceedingly awkward photo with a 40-year-old rapper. Just please, be responsible and don't try to drink the whole bottle before the show.

Tryorama: A Diorama Fair for Grown-Ups

Tryorama is the latest offering from Grown-Up Club, a monthly group that encourages Twin Cities adults to embrace their inner high school student (in a good way). This month's event is a diorama fair based around the loose theme of “American Lyfe: 50 Years in the Future,” with contestants encouraged to build cute little models representing their vision of the future for a $100 cash prize. While it's too late to enter, you're welcome to wander around the exhibits and sample some of Sisyphus Brewing's delicious beers with no admission cost.

St. Paul Winter Carnival

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Downtown St. Paul and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds, the Winter Carnival is an annual delight. Music fans should make sure to peep local folk legend Charlie Parr performing at Rice Park on Friday and New Orleans-style brass band McNasty Brass on Sunday afternoon. There's also snow and ice carving competitions, a giant snow slide, and much, much more.
