A good excuse to drink beer and sing loud – the Beer Choir

You go and sing, and drink beer.

The Twin Cities is getting its own Beer Choir. Yes, it's a real thing.

Mike Engelhardt started it back in 2015 after he got the idea to combine two of his favorite things – choir and beer, Beer Choir's website says.

It's a way to get together with friends, have some beers, and sing in "some organized fashion." But also to make choral singing more accessible and get more people involved in singing – think of it as a community arts event, with beer.

Since Beer Choir made its debut in Illinois in 2015, the movement has grown to include 11 Beer Choir chapters around the country, Beer Choir's website says. The Twin Cities chapter will make its debut on Jan. 28 at Summit Brewing's Beer Hall in St. Paul, according to a Facebook event.

The event is organized by Adam Reinwald, who is the assistant conductor at the National Lutheran Choir, the Pioneer Press reports. He expects as many as 200 people to show up, which would make it the biggest Beer Choir launch event in history, the paper notes.

All are welcome to come sing and drink – no experience is necessary, the Facebook event says. And if you want to practice before, all the Beer Choir chapters sing from the same hymnal, which includes many traditional drinking songs.

This Beer Choir theme song might give you a better idea of what the group is all about:

The Twin Cities Beer Choir has a few more events planned, including singing at the Beer Dabbler on Feb. 4, and at the American Choral Directors Association's national conference in March at the Minneapolis Convention Center, the Pioneer Press says.
