A Judy Garland biopic is in the works

The film will celebrate Garland's voice, her capacity for love, and her "sheer pizzazz."

A biopic about Judy Garland is in the works, but it won't focus on her time as Dorothy.

Pathé and Calamity Films announced Monday they'll begin principal photography on the film Judy in February, with Renee Zellweger playing Garland.

This will be the first ever biopic about the Grand Rapids, Minnesota, native, Entertainment Weekly notes

Judy will tell the story of "the world's greatest entertainer" near the end of her life as she performs in her final concerts in London in 1968.

The announcement for the film describes it as:

"It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians, and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Even her dreams of romance seem undimmed as she embarks on a courtship with Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband. And yet Judy is fragile. After working for 45 of her 47 years, she is exhausted; haunted by memories of a childhood lost to Hollywood; gripped by a desire to be back home with her kids. Will she have the strength to go on?”

Pathé says Judy will celebrate Garland's voice, her capacity for love, and her "sheer pizzazz."

British stage director Rupert Goold will direct the film, which is based off a script written by Tom Edge (The Crown).

Pathé has a history of making successful films, including Slumdog Millionaire and Selma.

Garland died in London in 1969 of an accidental barbiturate overdose, People said.
